The most photographed town in Morocco. Experienced the way it deserves.

Chefchaouen sits in a valley of the Rif Mountains, 2 hours from Tangier, and it is painted entirely in shades of blue. Every alley, every staircase, every doorway — blue. Built by Moorish refugees from the Spanish Reconquista in 1471, expanded by Jewish communities in the 1930s, the blue is old, layered, and unlike anything in the rest of Morocco.

The problem with Chefchaouen in 2025 is that everyone knows about it. Group tour buses from Tangier, from Fez, from cruise ships all arrive between 10am and 2pm. The town gets genuinely crowded. The solution is simple: leave earlier, go deeper, and have a guide who was born there.

We pair Hassan — who handles everything from Tangier and the drive — with a local guide who grew up in the medina. Someone who knows which alleys are still quiet at 9:30am, which rooftop has the view that isn't on Instagram yet, and which family-run restaurant serves the actual local food. The day costs $420 for your whole group. Competitors charge that per person.

Stop 01

Rif Mountains Drive

The 2-hour drive from Tangier is itself part of the experience. Hassan stops at a mountain viewpoint where cedar forests drop into the valley below. On a clear day you can see the Mediterranean coast from here.

Stop 02

Uta el-Hammam Square

The central square of Chefchaouen — the 15th-century kasbah on one side, the mosque on the other, cafés filling the middle. You arrive before the tour groups and have it to yourselves.

Stop 03

The Blue Medina

90 minutes walking the blue alleys with your local guide. He takes you through the residential sections that group tours skip. Actual families, actual life, actual blue streets without a crowd of phones blocking the view.

Stop 04

Ras el-Ma Spring

Above the medina, where the mountain water comes down. Women still wash rugs and carpets here. It's where the town ends and the mountain begins. Quietly beautiful.

Stop 05

Jewish Quarter

Behind the jewellery souk, a neighbourhood that tells a chapter of Chefchaouen history most visitors don't know. Your local guide explains.

Stop 06

Artisan Souk

Riffian handicrafts — wool blankets, woven bags, cedar woodwork. Genuinely good quality, no pressure, reasonable prices. Your guide knows which shops are authentic.

Why do you use two guides (Hassan + a local guide) for this tour?

Hassan handles the Tangier pickup, the drive, and the return — and he speaks English and French fluently. The local Chefchaouen guide was born in the medina and knows it at a level no outsider can match. The combination is better than either guide alone. One smooth day, no confusion.

Will it be crowded?

We leave at 7:30am specifically to arrive before the main tour groups. The blue alleys before 10am are a completely different experience. By lunch, when the crowds arrive, you'll already have done the best parts.

Is Chefchaouen worth a full day from Tangier?

Yes — the drive alone is 2 hours each way. A half-day there isn't enough time to go deep. This tour is designed to give you the full experience: the quiet morning, the depth, lunch on a rooftop, and free afternoon time. It's one of the best days available in northern Morocco.

Can we make this a 2-day trip and stay overnight in Chefchaouen?

Yes. That's actually what we recommend for anyone who wants to experience the sunset and the evening when the day-trippers are gone. Message Aymane and he can build a 2-day northern Morocco itinerary that includes an overnight in Chefchaouen.
