Half a day inside the city that shaped Morocco's identity.

Tangier is one of the most layered cities in Africa. For centuries it was the intersection of empires — Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish, French, British. Writers came here: Bowles, Burroughs, Ginsberg, Matisse. Diplomats, spies, merchants, refugees. The city absorbed all of them and remained itself.

This half-day tour takes you into the parts of Tangier that are rarely seen by anyone who arrives without a guide. The Medina's interior lanes — not the tourist fringe but the actual working city. The Kasbah quarter at the top of the old city, with its views over the Strait of Gibraltar toward Spain. The Grand Socco, where the old city ends and the modern one begins.

Hassan has been walking these streets for 30 years. He knows every corner, every artisan, every story. Three hours with him is worth more than three days alone.

Stop 01

The Grand Socco

The gateway between old and new Tangier. A square where Berber traders have gathered for centuries. Hassan explains the city's geography and history here before you enter the medina.

Stop 02

The Medina

The labyrinthine old city. Spice markets, artisan workshops, fabric souks, mosaic-tiled fountains. Hassan navigates the quieter quarters and the real commercial life of the city — not the tourist-facing perimeter.

Stop 03

The Kasbah

The fortified citadel at the top of the old city. The former palace of the Sultan's representative. Narrow whitewashed lanes and a terrace with a direct view across the Strait to the coast of Spain, 14 kilometres away.

Stop 04

The Petit Socco

The small square at the heart of the old city. The café where Burroughs and Bowles sat and wrote. Hassan tells you the literary and diplomatic history of this square — what it meant during the International Zone era.

00:35

Guided walking tour through the Medina

Continue into the heart of the Tangier old medina, where narrow alleyways lead to traditional souks, artisan workshops, and vibrant local markets. Experience authentic Moroccan daily life while your guide shares insights into the city’s history, culture, and traditions.

Flexible Meals

Your comfort comes first. All meals — breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks — are simply recommendations and can be easily adjusted to suit your tastes, dietary needs, or any special requests. Our goal is to make every meal a pleasant, personalized part of your journey.

Is this suitable for people who have never been to a Moroccan medina before?

Yes — and particularly so. First-time visitors benefit most from a guide. The lanes are disorienting, the context is invisible without someone to explain it, and the experience of having Hassan navigate you through is completely different from wandering alone.

Is this walking-intensive? Is it suitable for older travellers?

The medina and Kasbah involve walking on uneven cobblestone lanes with some slopes. The tour is not physically demanding but flat shoes are recommended. Hassan can adjust the pace based on your group's needs — tell Aymane when you book if mobility is a consideration.

Can we combine this with Cap Spartel?

Yes — that's our Tangier Full Day tour at $350, which covers the medina, Kasbah, Cap Spartel, and Hercules Caves in one full day. Better value, more complete. Message Aymane and he can advise on which fits your schedule.

What time of day is best for this tour?

Morning is ideal — the medina is quieter, the light in the Kasbah is exceptional, and it leaves your afternoon free. But Hassan can guide at any time of day. Let Aymane know your schedule and he'll advise.
